Rights and Responsibilities

Uplands has achieved their level 1 award for Rights and Responsibilities. UNICEF’s Rights Respecting School Award is a whole school award which gives recognition for placing the values of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) at the core of their school’s values. Every class has a class charter. This lists the rights and responsibilities in the classroom which the children decided on as a class. At playtime and lunchtime the children refer to their rights and responsibilities listed on a lunchtime charter. These were agreed by members of the school council, peer mediators and lunchtime supervisors. The school council is run by the children. They hold regular meetings and make decisions that have a beneficial impact on them. Peer mediators help to resolve conflicts in the playground. Classes have been learning about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC)and have been campaigning to help children who are not receiving these basic rights. They have taken part in 'The World's biggest lesson' and 'Stand up to Poverty' days. The children have also been learning about the importance of being a global citizen by buying Fair Trade items and looking after the environment. A global citizen in a Rights Respecting School is someone who knows their rights, believes everybody has rights and is committed to working towards a world where everyone can access their rights. They have also been learning how to be active global citizens.
